KAS , 41km east of Patara, is beautifully situated, nestled in a
curving bay against a backdrop of vertical, 500m-high cliffs. However,
what was a quaint fishing village as recently as the early 1980s has
grown to become a tourist metropolis. There's no beach to speak of, but
there's plenty to see in the countryside around, and the town does get
lively at night. It's also the site of ancient Antiphellos , the ruins
of which litter the streets of the modern town, as well as covering the
peninsula to the west. Most interesting of these is the lion tomb , a
towering structure that had two burial chambers, at the top of Uzun
Çarsi. Some 500m from the main square, along Hastane Caddesi, a small,
almost complete Hellenistic theatre looks out to sea; on a nearby
hilltop stands a unique rock-cut Doric tomb , also almost completely
intact.
From the bus station it's a five-minute walk downhill to the waterfront.
The tourist office at Cumhuriyet Meydana 5 (summer daily 8am-7pm; winter
Mon-Fri 8am-5pm; tel 0242/836 1238) has lists of hotel and pension
prices. Cheapest options can be found west of the centre along Hastane
Cad. Yali , Hastane Cad 11 (tel 0242/836 1132; £5-10/$8-16), has ensuite
rooms and sea views plus a shared kitchen, as does the next door Andifli
(tel 0242/836 1042; £5-10/$8-16) which includes breakfast. Further along,
the Gülsen , Hastane Cad 23 (tel 0242/836 1171; under £5/$8), has rooms
and a few sea-facing balconies. The Karakedi Korsan hotel up the hill to
the north at Yeni Camii Sok 7 (tel 0242/836 1887; £5-10/$8-16) features
a roof terrace overlooking the amphitheatre, plus a pool and Internet
access. There are two nearby campsites : the tidy Olympos (tel 0242/836
2252) is about 2km from the centre on the Kalkan road, while Kas Camping
(tel 0242/836 1050), is 1km west of town on Hastane Caddesi, and has its
own seaside diving platform, restaurant and bar.
Cheapest restaurant is the unlicensed Mevlana , Elmali Cad, offering
simple kebab dishes. Otherwise Smiley's , at 11 Gursoy Sok, also offers
good simple Turkish fare, as does Oba , behind the main post office -
though at a price. Chez Evy , in the backstreets east of the waterfront
at Terzi Sok 2, serves up an enticing blend of Turkish and French
cuisine. The current crop of bars includes the Red Post , round the
corner from Chez Evy , and the Déjà Vu, east of the harbour, which has
live music. For Internet access, Magicomm and Net House are beside the
post office.
